Reconstruct Turf & Soil on the National Mall
Washington, DC

Heritage Landscapes and an interdisciplinary team, led by HOK, assembled the documents for a major effort to reconstruct the turf and soils at the National Mall in Washington, DC, and work is underway on the three east panels.  The project includes new curb inlets and cisterns to capture rainwater, cleanse, and reuse it to irrigate the carefully graded, domed lawn panels.  Photographs depict the amendment of the soils to support a healthier turf able to withstand 25 million visitors and 3000 permitted events annually.
