Walkill, New York

For the degraded Fowler Garden, at Madison Lewis Woods, Walkill NY, Heritage Landscapes studied historic documents and listened to community voices to design a garden restoration to be undertaken in phases as a hands-on community project. A small group of historic photos provided a basis for creating a period garden plan. We studied plants in these photos and their character to prepare a proposed restoration plant list. The mayor is gathering support and leading the garden rebuilding effort.

1910 historic photographs reveal plants of the day - umbrella catalpa trees, conical spruce, hemlock hedge, heliotrope, peony and species lilies. All plants available today and, with consideration of plant pests and diseases, can be used or substituted for garden restoration. Courtesy Walkill Mayor’s Office
