Historic landscapes of defense and the memorial landscapes of internment are repositories of our collective memory. The preservation of battlefields and cemeteries often combines aspects of preserving landscape character, accommodating current use and overcoming abuse, while addressing vegetation management and finite resources.

Heritage Landscapes has successfully addressed these issues in several projects. For Old Nauvoo Burial Ground we recommended commemoration at the entry, improved access and harmonious treatment of the open cemetery landscape to foster contemplation. We planned a successful community project to stabilize, manage vegetation and provide access to the Conanicut Battery, a Revolutionary War earthwork overlooking the Narragansett Bay, Jamestown RI. To address Forest Lawn, Buffalo NY, our Landscape Renewal plan will return the wooded canopy to this important cemetery. In each case historic character and commemoration are brought forward together to enrich the historic site.
