Lincoln Cottage National Historical Monument

Sustainability & Stewardship

Lincoln Cottage National Historical Monument
Washington, DC

Lincoln Cottage, the summer retreat of President Lincoln and his family, was used heavily by the President during the years of the Civil War.  Owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the property today is open to the public as a National Monument.  With the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Hillier Architecture and their multi-disciplinary team, Heritage Landscapes is currently working to preserve, adapt and interpret the historic landscape of Lincoln Cottage National Historical Monument at the historic Soldier’s Home and the companion Visitor Education Center in Washington DC, in anticipation of increased public visitation. The Lincoln Cottage Historic Landscape Report & Preservation Treatment Plan, completed in 2004, uncovered sufficient documentation for the 1860s Lincoln Cottage South Lawn to recommend restoration of selected missing features and development of an interpretive sequence along curving paths. The implementation, currently underway addresses both the transformation of the 1904 Administration Building to a Visitor Education Center and the rehabilitation of the Lincoln Cottage and landscape.  At the invitation of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) partnered with the client and design team in a pilot project for LEED certification of an historic building.  Collaboration among the client, design team, and USGBC is seeking not only a LEED rating, but also recognition as a model project integrating historic preservation and sustainability for the new Visitor Center and landscape. Heritage Landscapes participated in team work sessions and is responsible for the water efficiency landscape and plantings, the stormwater quantity and quality and site construction practices LEED templates for this project.
